Do you have an old car you’re looking to get rid of? If so, why not consider donating it to Our Stomping Ground.
Thanks to our fantastic new partnership with Melwood, they’ll take your old car and turn it into cash that directly supports our mission to build inclusive communities for adults with disabilities.
As a nonprofit themselves, Melwood focuses on providing jobs for adults with disabilities. They have leveraged this charitable car donation scheme for years, and last year alone raised $3MM, half of which was on behalf of other nonprofits.
HOW IT WORKS
You can donate any vehicle: cars, vans, trucks, even boats with a trailer. You simply fill out the online donation form and provide some basic information such as the year, make and model of your vehicle, general condition, and vehicle identification number. Also, be sure to have the title and lien in hand. With Melwood’s help, we’ll take care of the rest by arranging a convenient time to tow your auto, and then send you your tax form (documenting your Non-Cash Charitable Contribution) four to six weeks after the donation.
BENEFITS OF DONATING
- Directly supports Our Stomping Ground‘s mission to build inclusive communities
- Hassle-free. No need to create an ad or coordinate logistics to have your car removed/towed (we do it for free!)
- You can donate your automobile from anywhere in the country
- Potential IRS tax deduction (please read below for further details)
MAXIMIZING YOUR TAX DEDUCTION
Car donations made to a charitable nonprofit organization are tax-deductible. The best practice is to consult with a tax professional on how to maximize your tax deduction since every car donation and tax situation is unique. In general, the IRS limits the tax deduction to the gross proceeds from the sale of the car, truck, or another vehicle. Charitable contributions must be itemized on Schedule A of Form 1040 to qualify. If the total deduction claimed on the tax return exceeds $500, Form 8283 “Non-Cash Charitable Contributions” must also be completed and attached to your tax returns. To learn more about what a donor’s responsibility is prior to making a car donation, please consult IRS Publication 4303 “Donors Guide to Vehicle Donations.”
