Healthy Habits for Independent Living uses a curriculum called Health Matters that was developed based on successful outcomes from the Health Promotion Program for Adults with Developmental Disabilities (DD) at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

This holistic program provides adults with DD a roadmap to healthy, independent living. The program is a combination of coursework and weekly practicums. We will baseline participants’ knowledge and current habits before the program starts so we can measure the impact after the program ends.

This is a weekly group, meeting every Thursday with additional practicums.

Lesson topics include:
  • health literacy
  • nutrition
  • exercise
  • meal planning/preparation/cooking
Practicums include:
  • gym instruction and workouts
  • weekly planning
  • grocery shopping
  • food preparation and cooking of a healthy meal
  • monitoring of weight, blood pressure, BMI, etc. so participants understand measures of health
About the instructor, Jenn Ko
