Our Stomping Ground offers a variety of programs including book clubs, games nights, art and fitness classes and more. We are always adding new events. Be sure to explore our calendar and register for those programs that are of interest. Some events are open to just residents of a specific community, some are open to residents and Friends of OSG, and others are open to anyone in the Northern VA area.

Healthy Habits for Independent Living uses a curriculum called Health Matters that was developed based on successful outcomes from the Health Promotion Program for Adults with Developmental Disabilities (DD) at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

This holistic program provides adults with DD a roadmap to healthy, independent living. The program is a combination of coursework and weekly practicums. We will baseline participants’ knowledge and current habits before the program starts so we can measure the impact after the program ends.

This is a weekly group, meeting every Thursday with additional practicums. 

Lesson topics include:
  • health literacy
  • nutrition
  • exercise
  • meal planning/preparation/cooking
Practicums include:
  • gym instruction and workouts
  • weekly planning
  • grocery shopping
  • food preparation and cooking of a healthy meal
  • monitoring of weight, blood pressure, BMI, etc. so participants understand measures of health
About the instructor, Jenn Ko

Jenn is joining us as an intern at George Washington University, Milken Institute School of Public Health.  Jenn is a grad student, nurse, and a huge Marvel fan! A hiker, reader, and painter (watercolors), Jenn is a huge foodie and is excited to explore new healthy recipes with our OSG community.  Launching this spring, Jenn will be our lead instructor for the Health Matters curriculum.
