Give the gift of access to affordable housing, community, and self-determination to adults with disabilities.

61 million adults have a disability in the U.S., of which 7.3 million have a developmental disability. 7 out of 10 of these adults live with family and specifically with a caregiver that is often over the age of 60, making it hard for them to provide care now and in the future.

In 2021 for our first annual THE BIG GIVE, we raised an impressive $113,000. As an organization that operates almost entirely on private donations, these funds were critical for us to continue our purpose of supporting adults with disabilities.

This year, we need to move from 100% volunteer-led programming to include specific services that are professionally-led. To do this and give our adults the training and support they need to live as independently as possible, we need to raise $200k.

Programming

On average, it costs us about $10,000 annually per adult to deliver our core volunteer-led programming of book clubs, dinner clubs, environmental clean ups, drumming and art clubs, weekend outings, housing webinars, and more. We currently support 90 adults, a number we predict will grow steadily with each new community we open, though our reach is far greater than that. OSG community members, other community residents, and friends of OSG members are all welcome to participate in our events at no cost – that’s what we mean when we talk about inclusive communities. And while our volunteer-led programs are at the core of what we do, they aren’t sufficient. For our adults to be able to live as independently as possible, we need to provide a range of professionally-led courses.

Professionally-led Programming

One example of an essential program that is highly requested by our members is a dating and friendship course for neurodivergent adults. The cost for a licensed professional to lead a 10-week course for ten people is $5,200–and we currently have 90 adults who all need to access this program.

Other professionally-led programs our adults both deserve and want include fitness classes, cooking and nutrition classes, driving lessons, and job training. In total, this will require a minimum of $200k in 2023.

You know what would be equally wonderful? A recurring monthly donation that helps us plan for the future, with confidence that our pipeline can more than support our adults’ social, physical, and emotional development. Social programming is crucial to ensure OSG members can access the same opportunities as their non-disabled peers and enjoy fun nights out with friends.

As an example:

  • By pledging $20 a monthone of our adults would be able to take part in paid-for events, such as the monthly Dinner or Film Club.
  • By pledging $10 a monthtwo of our adults would be provided resources for arts and crafts activities.
  • By pledging $5 a monthone of our adults would receive an annual Bike Arlington membership, which includes unlimited access to Capital Bikeshare, granting folks access to affordable, convenient, and fun transportation.
